Which Peruvian Amazon Destination Should You Choose?
Amazon River – Iquitos
Iquitos is the gateway to the Amazon River itself. Lodges and expeditions here focus on the great river and its tributaries: pink river dolphins, flooded forests, native communities and, further away, the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve.
Tambopata Rainforest – Puerto Maldonado
Tambopata is the easiest jungle to combine with Cusco and Machu Picchu, thanks to short flights to Puerto Maldonado. It is famous for macaw clay licks, Sandoval Lake and comfortable eco-lodges.
Manu National Reserve – from Cusco
Manu is one of the most biodiverse protected areas on the planet. Expeditions travel overland from Cusco, crossing from the Andes through cloud forest to the lowland rainforest; the Reserved Zone requires a special permit.
What to pack
- Light long-sleeved shirts and trousers.
- Insect repellent and sun protection.
- A rain jacket and a small torch.
- Binoculars for birds and wildlife.
Peru Amazon Expeditions: Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Iquitos, Tambopata and Manu?
Iquitos is the base for Amazon River trips, Tambopata offers easily reached eco-lodges and macaw clay licks near Puerto Maldonado, and Manu is a remote biosphere reserve reached overland from Cusco.
How many days do I need in the Amazon?
Three days give a good first taste. Four or five days allow deeper wildlife experiences such as clay licks or Pacaya Samiria, and six to seven days reach the most remote areas.
How do I get to the Peruvian Amazon?
Fly from Lima to Iquitos, or from Lima or Cusco to Puerto Maldonado for Tambopata. Manu expeditions usually start in Cusco and travel by road.
When is the best time to visit the Amazon?
The rainforest can be visited all year. The drier months, roughly May to October, make trails easier, while the high-water season brings flooded forests that are ideal for boat trips.
Do I need vaccinations?
A yellow fever vaccination is often recommended for the Peruvian Amazon. Check with a travel clinic or your doctor before your trip.
Are the rates per person?
Yes. 'Rates from' shows the starting price per person in a double room for the Essential category; other lodge categories are shown on each expedition page.
