Machu Picchu, Uyuni & Atacama in 2 Weeks: Frequently Asked Questions

Can I visit Peru, Bolivia and Chile in two weeks?

Yes. This 15-day itinerary is designed for exactly that: 8 days in Peru (Lima, Cusco, Rainbow Mountain and Machu Picchu), 3 days in Bolivia (La Paz and the Uyuni Salt Flats) and 4 days in Chile (San Pedro de Atacama and Santiago), connected overland and with three short flights.

Is this the best 2-week South America itinerary?

For travelers who want the great landscapes of the Andes, it is one of the most complete: it combines Machu Picchu, Lake Titicaca, the Salar de Uyuni and the Atacama Desert without backtracking. If you prefer more time in each place, see our 17-day and 21-day versions of this route.

How do you cross from Uyuni to the Atacama Desert?

At the end of the Uyuni expedition you cross from Bolivia into Chile at the Hito Cajón border post (approx. 4,500 m), near the Laguna Verde. You complete Bolivian exit and Chilean entry formalities, then transfer down to San Pedro de Atacama (approx. 2,400 m) in about an hour. Chile has strict agricultural controls: fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, dairy, seeds and honey are not allowed, so finish any snacks before the border and declare anything you are unsure about.

Is Rainbow Mountain too early in this itinerary?

Rainbow Mountain comes on your second day in Cusco and reaches more than 5,000 m, which can be hard if you are not acclimatized. If you are sensitive to altitude, we recommend moving it after Machu Picchu or replacing it with a gentler visit; horses can also be rented on the trail.

Do I need a visa for Bolivia and Chile?

Entry requirements for Bolivia depend on your nationality: many passports enter visa-free, while others need a tourist visa, which in some cases can be obtained in advance or on arrival. Rules change, so please check with the Bolivian consulate or your government’s travel advice before booking. Your passport must be valid for at least six months. Most nationalities do not need a tourist visa for Peru or Chile, but please confirm the rules for your passport.

What is the best time for this South America tour?

April to November, the dry season, is the best time for Machu Picchu, Lake Titicaca and the 4x4 crossing from Uyuni to Atacama. In January–March the Salar can become a mirror, but rain may close the lagoon route or the border.

Which currencies do I need?

Each country has its own currency: the Peruvian sol (PEN), the Bolivian boliviano (BOB) and the Chilean peso (CLP). US dollars are widely accepted for tourism services, and credit cards work in cities, but bring local cash for markets, tips and the remote Altiplano, where there are no ATMs.

How much does the 15-day Machu Picchu, Uyuni and Atacama tour cost?

The price depends on the hotel category you choose (Essential 2★, Comfort 3★, Superior 4★ or Deluxe 5★) and on the number of travelers. Open the Rates tab for the current price per person, based on double or twin accommodation. Domestic flights in Peru, Bolivia and Chile and your international flights are quoted separately.
