Classic Peru & Bolivia 15 Days: Frequently Asked Questions

Is 15 days enough for Peru and Bolivia?

Yes, for the classic highlights. In 15 days you see Lima, Cusco, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu in Peru, Lake Titicaca on both sides, La Paz and three days on the Uyuni Salt Flats. Domestic flights from La Paz to Uyuni and back save long overland journeys.

What is the best route between Peru and Bolivia?

The classic route goes Cusco – Puno – La Paz overland: the Route of the Sun from Cusco to Lake Titicaca, then a tourist bus along the lake to La Paz. It is scenic, crosses the border by land and avoids an expensive international flight. You cross between Puno and La Paz by tourist bus along the shore of Lake Titicaca. At the border post you complete Peruvian exit and Bolivian entry formalities on foot, usually in less than an hour, with assistance from the bus company, then continue to La Paz. Keep your passport and the immigration slip you receive in Peru at hand.

Do I need a visa for Bolivia?

Entry requirements for Bolivia depend on your nationality: many passports enter visa-free, while others need a tourist visa, which in some cases can be obtained in advance or on arrival. Rules change, so please check with the Bolivian consulate or your government’s travel advice before booking. Your passport must be valid for at least six months.

What will I see on the 3-day Uyuni tour?

Day 1: the train cemetery, Colchani and the Salar de Uyuni with Incahuasi Island. Day 2: flamingo lagoons, the Stone Tree and Laguna Colorada. Day 3: the Sol de Mañana geysers and the Polques hot springs before returning to Uyuni. You travel by 4x4 with a driver-guide and all meals are included.

When is the best time to visit the Uyuni Salt Flats?

From January to March, rainwater can cover the Salar de Uyuni and turn it into a giant mirror reflecting the sky — the famous mirror effect. From April to November the salt flat is dry, white and hexagonal, the skies are clear and all the high lagoons are accessible. Heavy rain can occasionally change the route on the lagoon days.

How does the itinerary help with altitude?

You start in Cusco (approx. 3,400 m) with a free afternoon, spend a night in the lower Sacred Valley and visit Machu Picchu (approx. 2,430 m) before continuing to Puno (approx. 3,830 m), La Paz (approx. 3,640 m) and Uyuni (approx. 3,650 m). By the time you reach the geysers (approx. 4,900 m) you have had more than ten days to acclimatize.

What is the weather like in the Bolivian Altiplano?

Days are sunny and bright, but nights are very cold, often below freezing, especially from May to August. Pack thermal layers, a warm jacket, hat, gloves, sunglasses and high-factor sunscreen. The local currency is the boliviano (BOB); carry some cash for small purchases.

How much does the 15-day Peru and Bolivia tour cost?

The price depends on the hotel category you choose (Essential 2★, Comfort 3★, Superior 4★ or Deluxe 5★) and on the number of travelers. Open the Rates tab for the current price per person, based on double or twin accommodation. Domestic and international flights within the route are quoted separately.
