Lake Titicaca & Uyuni 12 Days: Frequently Asked Questions

Can I combine Lake Titicaca and the Uyuni Salt Flats in one trip?

Yes. They lie on the same high plateau, the Altiplano. This 12-day route reaches Lake Titicaca from Cusco along the Route of the Sun, crosses to La Paz by bus along the lake and flies from La Paz to Uyuni, so you see both wonders plus Machu Picchu in under two weeks.

Which side of Lake Titicaca is better, Peru or Bolivia?

Each side has its highlights. From Puno in Peru you visit the Uros floating islands and Taquile Island, included in this tour. On the Bolivian side, Copacabana and the Isla del Sol are known for Inca ruins; they can be added as an extra night on request.

How do you get from La Paz to the Uyuni Salt Flats?

The fastest way is a domestic flight from La Paz to Uyuni (approx. 1 hour), which this itinerary uses in both directions. The alternative is an overnight bus of about 10 hours; we can arrange it on request to reduce costs.

Do I need a visa for Bolivia?

Entry requirements for Bolivia depend on your nationality: many passports enter visa-free, while others need a tourist visa, which in some cases can be obtained in advance or on arrival. Rules change, so please check with the Bolivian consulate or your government’s travel advice before booking. Your passport must be valid for at least six months.

How do you cross the border from Peru to Bolivia?

You cross between Puno and La Paz by tourist bus along the shore of Lake Titicaca. At the border post you complete Peruvian exit and Bolivian entry formalities on foot, usually in less than an hour, with assistance from the bus company, then continue to La Paz. Keep your passport and the immigration slip you receive in Peru at hand.

When is the best time to visit Lake Titicaca and Uyuni?

From January to March, rainwater can cover the Salar de Uyuni and turn it into a giant mirror reflecting the sky — the famous mirror effect. From April to November the salt flat is dry, white and hexagonal, the skies are clear and all the high lagoons are accessible. Heavy rain can occasionally change the route on the lagoon days. At Lake Titicaca, April to November brings sunny days and cold nights.

How does the itinerary help with altitude?

Cusco (approx. 3,400 m) comes first with a free afternoon, Machu Picchu (approx. 2,430 m) is lower, and you then climb gradually to Puno (approx. 3,830 m), La Paz (approx. 3,640 m) and Uyuni (approx. 3,650 m). The highest point is the Sol de Mañana geyser field (approx. 4,900 m) on day 10. Drink plenty of water and consult your doctor before travel.

How much does the 12-day Lake Titicaca and Uyuni tour cost?

The price depends on the hotel category you choose (Essential 2★, Comfort 3★, Superior 4★ or Deluxe 5★) and on the number of travelers. Open the Rates tab for the current price per person, based on double or twin accommodation. Domestic and international flights within the route are quoted separately.
